First Floor- 370 ft²

The first floor of our family home consists of a open plan dining room and kitchen. It also features a full bath and shower wet room, separate toilet and utility area.

A beautiful mix of brick, stainless steel and natural wood allow for a feeling of minimalism whilst not being clinical.

A custom staircase leads into the second floor and allows for natural light to spill in from the veranda upstairs.

* High speed internet runs throughout the house via a wifi modem on the second floor.

Entranceway

Our home is named ‘ALCOVE’ in reference to it being tucked away inside Onomichi’s narrow logi pathways, typical of the area. In addition to this, we wanted to blend the hidden treasure concept into the house itself, too.

The concept for the hallway itself was to provide a picture frame style doorway to the home- revealing not too much, but just enough to entice those who may be seeing the home for the first time. With deep blue walls and stylish metal fixtures contrasting the warm wood floors, we like to think it’s a welcoming way to come home, and just as enticing to return to.

The sliding door opens to reveal a soothing entranceway with an atrium style ceiling and cool concreted floor, gently illuminated by feature lighting that spills into the hallway with warm welcome.

An electronic doorbell system will allow you to easily hear guests or returning loved ones from anywhere in the house. With enough space for shoes, umbrellas and anything else you may need to keep handy before you head out, we hope it sets the mood for the day ahead.

Dining Space

Our dream with ALCOVE was to create a space that people would be able to connect and relax. On the first floor is a large dining area, which was created to easily double as a workspace thanks to the large table and ample chairs.

The large dining table and chairs that feature in the dining room allow for you to comfortably cook, serve and eat in a family-esque style with loved ones. Onomichi is a food lovers paradise, and we really recommend taking a look around the shotengai for yourselves to find your favourites. The dining table itself is made from reclaimed wooden scaffolding, which we feel really connects us with the history of the home. It helps that it looks absolutely fabulous as a backdrop in any meal of the day photographs, too- after all, the camera needs to eat as well!

We provide everything you may need to have a comfortable dining experience. With our love of quirky tableware blended with minimalist plates and glassware, you can ensure that your food will not only be delicious but look great, too. We also provide plenty of comfy chairs to surround the table, making sure you have plenty of options for your perfect setup.

As designers, we often find ourselves lacking in physical space when we stay in hotels, and often holiday rentals will only have a small dining table or workspace that isn’t ideal for those of us who need more than a laptop to get the job done. With strong wifi and plenty of outlets dotted around the dining area, and a large surface area at an accessible level, you can certainly work on your next creative venture here in between lunch runs.

Kitchen

Our home boasts a full kitchen with plenty of space for you to comfortably prepare a meal, arrange a charcuterie or admire the goodies that you bought at the farmers’ market that day. Gone are the days of struggling over one kettle and washing your cups in the hotel bathroom sink- we’ve gotten everything ready for you and even have a full sized fridge to store your goodies in.

A stainless steel worktop will allow you to generously cook a meal from scratch without worrying about a mess- the sink is full sized and we have plenty of pots and pans for you to utilise, too. A fully equipped appliance list means that you can also experiment with those viral Japanese conbini concoctions as well as pantry space allowing you to sneak in for second helpings at midnight.

In the past we have had cooking workshops run in our home, with the audience at attention on the dining table as the host prepares the food. With the seamless kitchen-dining space, setting the table for dinner will be a relaxing affair, as will clean up afterwards.

Living Room

When we first started work on our home, our architect discovered the burnished wood beams featured in many of these photos that had been hidden away for many years. We fell in love immediately, and wanted to incorporate them into the high ceilings of the home- we chose a freeform lighting solution that would provide not only light but a sense of style into the home.

Speaking of style, our work in London as surface designers has led to many collaborations over the years, and pride of place on the second floor sits a custom denim jacquard blind featuring our work with the team over at Setouchi Denim, a local company that utilises traditional denim dying into their soft furnishings. Paired with crisp white custom sunblinds from WALPA Japan, it adds a sense of art and style to the space that perfectly matches the cool whites, blues and pale wood of the rest of the room.

This living space is a large area that can be utilised in many ways. It features a three seater sofa, large coffee table, chaise longue and TV as well as various reading materials, ensuring you can feel perfectly at home even when you are away from yours.

Modular bulbs paired with bedside lights means that you can change the settings as and when you need whilst keeping the ambience at a good level. Both of the beds feature outlets for charging your essential electronics and also contain small nooks for any reading material you may want to keep handy.

A large wardrobe space with hangers and drawer/ shelf storage mean you can unpack all your favourite pieces and have somewhere big enough to store them in preparation for the next day. We also provide a clothes steamer and iron to ensure they can be as ready to go as you are.
